The band name was inspired by a run-in they had with the police while rehearsing in an abandoned warehouse.
After a brief stint under the band name Sweet Rooster, Van Zant, along with guitarists Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi, bassist Ken Lyons and drummers Steve Brookins and Jack Grondin became. 38 Special, began playing together in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.
