After a brief stint under the band name Sweet Rooster, Van Zant, along with guitarists Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi, bassist Ken Lyons and drummers Steve Brookins and Jack Grondin became. 38 Special, began playing together in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.
